Tailend Moss – February

Tailend Moss – February
Sunrise over Tailend Moss.

Not a great deal has changed between January and February. It’s been a very mild winter this year and so far there has been very minimal snow. The swans that had appeared in January are still here and there has been a definite increase in birdsong as they start to prepare for the breeding season. I came across a Smooth Newt on a cycle path yesterday so they are obviously starting to come out of hibernation, no sign of any frog activity in the ponds yet though. A sure sign of spring arriving was when two Oyster Catchers flew overhead and circled around the moss. A Heron flew overhead but never landed.

There has been an increase in the Roe Deer population in recent years although so far this year I have only identified two individuals, a male and a female. I had a conversation with a ranger here a number of years ago and he told me he was concerned that the deer may be being hunted although I have to say I haven’t seen any evidence of this.

Looking forward now to the frogs showing. I’ll repost again in March.
