Kingfisher surfacing with fish — Kingfisher with catch.

I recently had a day photographing Kingfisher’s at Alan McFadyen’s fantastic hide in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland. I spent some time trying to capture a Kingfisher diving. After many unsuccessful attempts I noticed this image whilst trailing through my images.

A Kingfisher is so fast that I think the water droplets in the top of the image were actually created as it entered the water.

The fish it has caught is a small trout parr (young trout).

I like the image because of its dynamism and action. It was captured on my Nikon Z6 ii with the Nikkor Z 105mm MC f2.8 VR S lens at 1/2000 sec, f5.6, ISO 5000.

I can still recall when I received my first decent camera. It was my wife’s gift to me for my 21st birthday, an Olympus OM1n. I had always been interested in photography even as a child, carrying an old Kodak box brownie amongst others but the Olympus was my introduction to SLR’s and photography freedom. I still have boxes with thousands of old photographs and slides. I took the camera with me when I went to work in South Africa for a couple of years starting in 1980. I always remember that we left on the 3rd of April, the day after Britain declared war on Argentina during the Falkland crisis. That was when my love affair with Africa started although it would be many years before I could return. It was some time later when I upgraded to a Nikon SLR. When decent digital photography arrived, I took the plunge with a Nikon D70 which would have been around 2004. Nowadays I am still with Nikon, using a Z6 II mirrorless. I still retain a D7200 as my second camera as it is still a fantastic piece of kit.
